Sensor technology enables precise position monitoring of marine hoses

Our intelligent hoses enable significantly easier management as well as safer and more efficient workflows on the high seas. This is all thanks to new sensor technology.

For example, the sensor that is attached to the hose can closely monitor the position of the individual hose sections and detect potential damage before it happens, reducing downtime and consequently costs. Connectivity with Continental.cloud enables operators to view all information directly on their laptops or smartphones and take targeted action at an earlier stage.

For greater efficiency and service management

The conditions offshore are often rough and challenging. Violent weather changes, heavy swells, storms and rainfall sometimes go hand in hand. Even though our Oil & Marine hoses are designed to be extremely robust by nature, the environment and operational issues can lead to the string of hoses behaving abnormally which can lead to damages and downtime of the buoy system. “Having a system that can monitor the position of our hoses accurately is important at sea,” emphasized Paul Staton, Technical Manager based in Grimsby - UK. “Operators have to go out in boats regularly to check on the condition of the hose string. Our new patented sensor system can replace this time-consuming and costly check.” The sensors, which are fitted to the floating hose sections between the tanker and the buoy system, detect the hose string orientation and identify whether individual hoses have been over-bent. The offshore buoy system is principally used to transfer Crude Oil from tankers to onshore storage tanks for onward processing by a refinery. The system utilizes Continental floating hoses between the buoy and tanker, and subsea hoses between the buoy and a seabed pipeline to the storage tanks. The positioning system on the floating hoses will reduce operational downtime through early detection of issues in the system.

A first for the market – and soon even more functions

With the new intelligent hoses, we are opening up new opportunities for the market. “We are the first in the industry to offer this kind of digital system,” said Paul. New functions are to be added to the sensor for marine hoses soon, such as remote-controlled leak detection and collision warning, load monitoring, service life optimisation and cradle to grave asset management.

Continental’s long-term goal is to extend functionalities of the cloud to benefit other products within the portfolio of the Oil and Marine Industry.
